We’ve mentioned a few times on Girly Drinks that we LOVE wine. We’ve been to quite a few wine bars in our area and gladly tested a variety of wines.
With all the different types of wine, though, it can often be intimidating ordering wine. How do you know which one will taste good? Have you had this one before? Many of us often stick to wines we know so as not to order something we’ll hate, which is understandable, but why not try something new?
To that, we introduce to you wine flights, or wine tasting. Wine flights are new to us, but not new in general.
What is a wine flight/wine tasting?
A wine flight is simply three to eight “mini” glasses of wine, or a tasting. The flights are glasses of similar wines, grouped by winery, vintage, year or type.
While some are very particular about the wine tasting procedure, if your only intention is to try out new wines, remember the 5 s’s of wine tasting: See, Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Savor.
We tried a wine flight, or wine tasting, recently, focusing on Chilean Reds, consisting of:
- Marques de Casa Concha, Rapel Valley, Merlot
Ripe and lush, with lots of blackberry, plum, mocha and vanilla flavors. Plush, velvety finish is loaded with fruit and picks up a hint of grilled herb. Delicious, forward, modern style. - Portrait, Maipo Valley, Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon Mix
Despite its relatively small size, this is the most celebrated appellation in Chile. This wine has an intense deep violet. Flavors of ripe plums and blackberries from the Shiraz and ripe red fruit and cassis from the Cabernet add to the wine’s character. - Terra Noble, Gran Reserva, Cabernet/Carmenere Mix
Nice and ripe, with expressive plum, cassis, tobacco and asphalt aromas. The mouth feel and flavor profile are both fairly full, as cassis and plum notes run the show.
When we order girlie drinks, we generally stick to fruity wines when we buy or order wine, so this wine tasting/wine flight was a perfect way to try wines that we wouldn’t typically order. Our group also ordered a “Big Red Flight” which was rated high by the people who tried it. I stuck to Chilean Reds since I had recently had a Chilean Strawberry Sparkling Wine/Champagne that I absolutely loved. My favorite of the flight? The merlot, surprisingly! I say surprisingly because I didn’t think that I liked Merlot; I generally stick to Pinot Noirs and Pinot Grigio or champagnes. Found a new type that I like!
The next time you feel like you’re in a wine or drink rut, head to a wine bar with some friends and try out a new wine flight.
