I had an amazing opportunity to spend a relaxing 8 days in beautiful St. Lucia earlier this month. Sun, water, and tiki bars everywhere — I’m sad to be back, but glad to have spent some time exploring the island.

We stayed in one of the Sandals Resorts, Sandals Grande. A beautiful all-inclusive resort that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone wanting to visit St. Lucia.

More importantly for this site, though, the cocktails. Lots of frozen concoctions available at the tiki bar, swim up pool bar, and any of the variety of bars at the resort.

I stopped taking pictures after a few drinks, but here’s what I caught below:

Two non-traditional margaritas to help non Tequila fans enjoy Cinco de Mayo:

Van Gogh ‘rita:

Created by local Chicago mixologist, Mary Breclaw

• 2 oz Van Gogh BLUE Vodka
• .5 oz triple sec
• 1 oz Sour mix
• 2 oz Soda
• Lime wedge

Pour the Van Gogh BLUE Vodka and triple sec in a glass over ice.  Top with the sour mix and soda and garnish with a lime wedge.

Abuelorita

• 2 oz Ron Abuelo Añejo
• 1 oz triple sec
• 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice

In a shaker filled with ice add all ingredients and shake vigorously.  Strain into an ice filled rocks glass.  Garnish with lime wedge.

Old Fashioned

• 

  Mad Men Old Fashioned

  1 sugar cube

• 2 or 3 dashes of aromatic bitters, such as Angostura
• 2 1/2 ounces Four Roses Bourbon Single Barrel
• Soda water
• Orange slice, for garnish
• Maraschino cherry, for garnish
• Lemon zest twist, for garnish

Instructions: Put the sugar in an old-fashioned glass and moisten with the bitters. Crush them together with a muddler. Add the whiskey and fill the glass with ice. Stir well. If desired, fill the glass with soda water. Add the orange and cherry, and lemon twist, if using. Serve.

A few years ago, while watching Real Housewives of New York, I made a post about Bethenny Frankel and her consistent promotion of the Skinnygirl Margarita on the show — the product hadn’t been bottled yet nor sold to Jim Beam, but at the time, I couldn’t help but think that this was one smart lady.  My exact words after the first season Skinnygirl Margarita appeared were:

Jump ahead a few years and Bethenny now has her own show on Bravo, a talk show in the works, and a Skinnygirl line with products that range from Skinnygirl Cocktails and Skinnygirl Cleanse products to books and workout videos. There’s a few people I really respect in the entertainment industry because of their work ethic and hustle, and Bethenny Frankel is one of them. Ryan Seacrest is the other…

Unfortunately, I wasn’t a huge fan of the bottled version of the Skinnygirl Margarita. The recipe Bethenny spoke of on RHONY was delicious, but the bottled version seemed to0 processed for me. Granted, I’m not a fan of many bottled or pre-mixed margarita mixes, so Skinnygirl really didn’t stand a chance. There’s something about a fresh margarita that can’t be duplicated in a pre-mixed concoction.

Because of my disappointment with the Skinnygirl Margarita, I hadn’t been excited to try out her newly announced line of Skinnygirl cocktails, including a new line of flavored vodkas (Skinnygirl Cucumber, Tangerine, and Island Coconut), Skinnygirl wines, plus a Skinnygirl Pina Colada, on top of her already existing products (Skinnygirl Margarita, White Cranberry Cosmo, and Sangria).

Two of the newer products in the Skinnygirl captured my interest because of their flavors enough to give the line a second chance: the Skinnygirl Sangria and Skinnygirl Cucumber Vodka. While I’ve yet to come across the Cucumber Vodka in Michigan yet, after a bit of a hunt, I was able to locate a few bottles of Skinnygirl Sangria.

And I fell in love.

I’m already a huge fan of sangria and buy it bottled frequently, but I do have to admit the Skinnygirl Sangria is by far my favorite so far.

Light tasting, perfect with some fresh cut up fruit (I always have apples around), and not so high in alcohol content that you can’t enjoy a whole bottle by yourself — which yes, defeats the purpose of drinking a “Skinny” cocktail, but girl, it’s that good. Also, even though I run a website called Girly Drinks, I’ve become lazy about making cocktails and prefer a glass of wine or something that doesn’t have too many ingredients; Skinnygirl Sangria covers all those bases.

Per 5 flowing ounces, there are 132 calories, 22.5 grams of carbs, and 0 proteins or fat. 10.5% alcohol in Skinnygirl Sangria.

I found that a typical 750ml bottle of Skinnygirl Sangria runs about $13.99.

Another note about Skinnygirl Sangria: because the alcohol content is so low, unless you’re only placing it in the freezer for 5 minutes, Skinnygirl Sangria should be left in the fridge, not freezer, to chill.

Bourbon Street Blackberry Brut

Ingredients:

•

  1 1/2 oz Camarena Silver Tequila

• 2 oz Brut Champagne
• 7 Large Blackberries
• 1/2 oz Agave Nectar
• 1/4 oz Lemon Juice
• Blackberries Garnish

Directions:

Place blackberries, syrup and lemon juice in mixing glass. Muddle. Add tequila with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Double strain into large rocks glass over fresh ice. Top with brut champagne. Garnish with skewered blackberries.

Camarena Shamrock Shaker

Ingredients:

• 

  Green Drinks: Camarena Shamrock Shaker

  1 1/2 oz Familia Camarena Reposado Tequila

• 1/2 oz Sour Apple Liqueur
• 1/4 oz Agave Nectar
• 2 oz Lime Juice

Directions:

Combine liquids in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend and chill. Strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with a fan of thinly sliced green apples.

Emerald Crush

Ingredients:

• 

  Emerald Crush

  2 oz Blue Ice Organic Wheat Vodka

• 1/2 organic kiwi, peeled
• 1/2 organic lime, cut into quarters
• 1 teaspoon organic sugar

Directions:

Muddle fruit and sugar in a mixing glass until well crushed and juicy. Add ice and vodka and shake vigorously.  Pour all contents over ice into a tall tumbler and drink with straws.

Señor Patrick’s Salud

Ingredients:

• 

  Señor Patrick’s Salud

  1/2 oz Camarena Reposado Tequila

• 1/2 oz Irish Whiskey
• 1 oz Apple Juice
• 1/2 teaspoon Honey
• 1 oz Ginger Beer
• Quarter Lime Wedge – Squeezed

Directions:

Combine liquids except ginger beer in cocktail shaker with ice. Shake to blend. Strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with lime wedge. (Lower Calorie Cocktail: Approximately 106.17 calories based upon 1 oz = 1 ounce)

Green With Envy

Ingredients:

• 

  Green With Envy

  1 1/2 oz Blue Ice Vodka

• 1/2 oz Blue Curacao
• 2 1/2 oz Sweet & Sour
• 2 oz Orange Juice

Directions:

Blend ingredients together with crushed ice until slushy. Serve in a hurricane style glass. Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry arranged on a pick.

Mexican Shamrock Shooter

Ingredients:

• 

  Mexican Shamrock Shooter

  1/3 oz Camarena Silver Tequila

• 1/3 oz Butterscotch Schnapps
• 1/3 oz Irish Cream

Directions:

Layer liquids by placing Butterscotch Schnapps in bottom of glass. Slowly pour Irish Cream over back of bar spoon on top of schnapps. Finish with layer of Camarena Silver Tequila poured over back of bar spoon on top of Irish Cream.

Dirty Mojito

• 2 oz Soda Water
• 1/2 oz Lime Juice
• 6-7 Mint Leaves
• 1 teaspoon Sugar

Crush mint leaves with lime juice and sugar in a shaker.  Add rum and ice, shake and pour into a glass.  Top with soda water and garnish with mint.

Toast the start of the spring season with a refreshing lemonade cocktail!

  1 ½ oz Molinari Sambuca Extra

• 1 oz Monin Agave Nectar
• 1 ½ oz fresh lemon juice
• Club soda
• 1 basil leaf
• Ice, crushed
• Garnish Options: Lemon

Muddle agave and basil in mixing glass.  Add Molinari Sambuca, a scoop of crushed ice and lemon juice to mixing glass.  Cap and shake vigorously.  Strain over crushed ice and top with a splash of club soda.  Garnish with a lemon wedge.
